Meeting Minutes: 06 October, 2003
1. The EAPS Graduate Council met last week, and Melanie
Fewings, our
student representative, discussed ways to formalize and standardize thesis
proposal guidelines, periodic student evaluations, and thesis committee
meeting guidelines within the various programs of our department.
Among
the suggestions was that the Education Office keep records of when thesis
committee meetings occur and remind students to have them annually.
Also, Faculty Mentors exist to talk about issues ranging from picking
an
advisor and research topics to difficulties a student is having with the
program. These mentors exist not to replace a student's advisor,
rather to supplement resources available. More will follow after
the next
faculty meeting.
2. Long Pond was held this past weekend, and Maureen Long reports
it was
a huge success!
3. EAPS may host a Weekly Wednesday again in the spring, but we'll
wait
until we're asked before deciding to host another.
4. Jenny Matzel, our GSC representative, reported that the petition
supporting international students regarding U.S. security policies, which
was written at Yale, was amended after it circulated at MIT. The
GSC is
presently debating whether to submit its own petition, or continue
supporting the one that originated at Yale, which some of the GSC viewed
as weaker than the original version.
5. EGSAC will pay the team registration fee for Ice Hockey out of
our
sports budget. Katharine just sent an email encouraging you to join.
6. Upcoming Events:
A. The Chili Cookoff will be held at Peer Hour
on October 17.
B. The next EGSAC meeting will be November 6,
2003 at 12:30.
7. Finally, several students from EAPS will gather at Tommy Doyle's
(near
the Cambridge Brewing Company) in Kendall Square tonight at 8:00 p.m.
to
watch the Red Sox game. Please join, if you can!
Sincerely,
Rob Korty
Secretary
