Meeting Minutes: 3 Mar, 2003

 Hello all,

An EGSAC meeting was held yesterday from 12-1 on the 10th floor, and as
your dutiful secretary, it's my job to let you know what went down. Here's
the scoop:

1) Recent events -

Last week's EGSAC-sponsored Weekly Wednesday at the Muddy Charles
went well and a good time was had by all. In fact, we're planning on
sponsoring another one sometime in the fall.

The annual ski trip was a blast as usual, with nearly 30 people
attending. Budgeting for this event was almost perfect, we only went 46
dollars over budget. Not too shabby. Kerim has organized this trip for
past couple of years, and since he is planning/hoping to no longer be here
by this time next year, we're going to need somebody to take over the
planning for next time. Keep this in mind...

The Celtics/Rockets game went well, although participation seemed
to be hampered by the small number of tickets available and hefty ticket
prices.

2) Upcoming events -

Lindsay will be organizing a trip to see The Core in early April
when it's released in theaters. This long-awaited event has been hyped by
Lindsay since last September or so, so this one is DEFINITELY going to
happen.

There is a plan in the works to go see an Indian dance/theater
event later this month called "When Earth Sings." Stay tuned for details.

Vicki McKenna is planning to organize a seminar on writing CVs and
research statements, which should be super-useful. Again, stay tuned.

There will be another graduate student meeting with department
head Ron Prinn TOMORROW at 5:30 on the 9th floor. Ron will be talking
about the new hires that have taken place recently in our department, and
about the hiring and tenure process in EAPS (and in academia in general).
Should be a very informative meeting - don't miss it.

There was interest expressed at the meeting in organizing a trip
to see a Red Sox game once their season gets underway. I volunteered for
this one immediately, since it involves my beloved Sox. I'll keep you
posted!

3) IM Sports Update -

Volleyball is happening this spring - Kate has registered both a
men's team and a coed team. If you're interested in playing, let Kate
(kruhl@mit.edu) know.

The EAPS hockey team played in the recent on-campus hockey
tournament. Although our valiant EAPS warriors were vanquished in the
first round, everybody played well and had a great time. (For the record,
Kate tells us that the winning team was composed mostly of players from
the men's varsity team, so apparently our guys and gals were playing
against a bunch of ringers...)

4) Budget issues - our budget woes have been relieved by the addition of
$1200 to the current fiscal year's budget. (We were about $600 over
budget, mostly due to Long Pond and the WHOI donuts.) It also came up
during the meeting that we have a fabulous treasurer in Jenny Matzel, so
kudos to her!!

5) EAPS Spring Picnic and WHOI Summer Softball Picnic - these events will
be happening again this year (pending finding people to organize them). We
agreed to try to hold the Spring Picnic either at East Campus, on the Dot,
or over near the fitness center, as Tang (last year's location) is a bit
of a ways away. We need people to help organize these events - so let
Lindsay (schoenbl@mit.edu) know if you're willing to help out.

6) Other miscellaneous items - we are still lobbying for the creation of
an eapspostdocs mailing list so that we can keep the postdocs informed
with what's going on with EGSAC. Melanie Fewings has been working hard to
get a graduate student mentoring program up and running for next year, so
we're looking forward to that. I'm going to serve as the graduate student
rep to the Graduate Committee for the rest of this school year, and we'll
elect somebody to this position for next year. The Student Concerns
document is coming along well, although we still need to hear from
Geosystems, international students, the E34 crew, and Planetary Sciences.
Also, Ben Crosby brought up the possibility of a section devoted to
married grad students and those with families.

OK, I think that's it. Our next meeting should be on April 7 at noon, but
we'll send out a reminder. Please come to the meeting with Ron tomorrow
night. Also, the GSC is sponsoring a symposium on non-academic careers
this weekend (Saturday) and it sounds pretty interesting. The info is
below...

Your dutiful EGSAC secretary and GSC rep,
Maureen
