Meeting Minutes: 4 Nov, 2002
Hi all,
I am playing EGSAC secretary this week. An EGSAC meeting
was held on
Monday, Nov. 4th, here are the minutes:
Budget: We seem to be over-spending the EGSAC budget...
this will likely
not pose a problem but something to keep an eye on. At the next meeting
we
will go over the budget and review where we are half way through the
academic year regarding finances.
WHOI donuts will be managed by the 9th floor administrators
instead of by
EGSAC (money does come from EGSAC but it's logistically easier to have
the
9th floor administer).
Graduate student council: 2 relevant items from their latest
newsletter:
1.) There is a new initiative for an off-campus housing association.
This will advocate the Safe-Ride system for off campus students, and
make sure people know about on-campus events. This association will also
provide event funding... If you are a grad student living off campus,
you
can obtain $$ for your neighborhood if you want to host an event, as long
as it's publicized for all to attend.
2.) STUDENT LIFE FEE USE PROPOSALS: (pay attention here, all you who
resented the whopping $200 fee you shelled out...) You can submit a
proposal for ways to use this money, with a DECEMBER 2 DEADLINE. Anyone
can apply; proposals so far have been pretty general, big-picture ideas
(campus improvements, Physics Pride functions, [yes, really], etc.) Ideas
must be for projects that would benefit the graduate student community
as
a whole, and that would be advertised to the community. e.g. if you, yes
you, want to take part in Physics Pride events, this is where your money
may go. If you have others ideas for how to use this fee, turn in a
proposal by DECEMBER 2ND.
Chili peer hour: Kate Ruhl and Bill Lyons are organizing
a chili cooking
contest to take place at peer hour on Friday Nov. 15. Bring your entry
to
share and be judged... ALL CONTEST ENTRANTS WILL RECEIVE FREE BEER at
this
peer hour, and the winner gets some sort of prize. If you would like to
turn in receipts for what you spend on making the chili, you can turn
in
food receipts and be reimbursed for up to $15. This is in addition to
the
free beer you get that day. What a deal!! OK, now you read this
far, keep
going- you're almost done.
Winter trip: Kerim is organizing the annual EGSAC winter
trip over
Presidents day long weekend (Feb. 15-17), in New Hampshire. Registration
will take place before mid-January.
EAPS phone-a-thon: this was well attended and a successful
fund raiser,
with $5490 being raised from 63 gifts. Lindsay Schoenbohm won a prize
for
most dollars raised, and is thrilled with her gift certificate to MIT's
CopyTech.
Department liason: it was mentioned that students would
benefit from
having some sort of official liason through whom we can find out
department happenings such as the plan for any building renovations, new
hiring, etc. Lindsay has been doing this unofficially, but will met with
Ron Prinn to discuss having some kind of official means of distributing
important information to students - department newsletter or similar.
Department lecture series: Jenny reminds us that students
are welcome to
suggest speakers for the Dept. lecture series... if there's someone you
would like to invite to give a talk, ask your advisor to officially invite
them, and with your advisor as the go-between, it should be fairly easy
to
invite speakers.
Next EGSAC meeting is on Monday December 2, on the 10th
floor (1019) from
12:00 to 1:00. Pizza will be served.
That's about all from your not-really-EGSAC-secretary,
